BERLIN – God Help the Girl, the musical film from Belle & Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch, has been acquired for U.S. distribution by Amplify, the new distribution company formed in a merger between Variance Films and GoDigital.
The film, which premiered at Sundance, will open the Generations section of the 64th Berlinale this weekend before continuing on to the South by Southwest Film Festival in March.

Written, directed and featuring all original songs by Murdoch, God Help the Girl stars Emily Browning, Olly Alexander and Hannah Murray as three friends united by music and its possibilities over a summer in Glasgow. Barry Mendel (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums) produced.
Amplify is looking toward a U.S. release early this fall, with a home video release to follow.
“I like these guys! I don’t know much about the movie business yet, but Amplify seems pretty rock ‘n’ roll,” said Murdoch in a statement. “I know music has changed a lot recently; film is changing too. These guys get that. I’m glad we’re with them!”
The deal was brought together by Thorsten Schumacher of HanWay Films on behalf of the filmmakers and Dylan Marchetti, Kent Sanderson, and Logan Mulvey on behalf of Amplify.
