2014 Sacramento Undy 5000: Where runners compete in their underwear. Literally.

SACRAMENTO –

Consecutive days of rain didn’t stop determined runners from coming out in full force to William Land Park Saturday. Some dressed in unique racing attire.

More than 950 runners tackled the Undy 5000 course in their boxers, raising money and awareness for colon cancer.

“We came out to really get people talking about getting screened for colon cancer,” said Todd Setter, Director of Undy 5000. “But we wanted something different.”

And they delivered; instead of the typical t-shirt at the finish line, race officials handed out underwear, to draw attention to the cause.

“Get checked,” added one runner. “You can actually live for a long time if it’s caught early.”

Colon cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the U.S., with more than 50,000 colon cancer-related deaths each year, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Saturday’s event raised nearly $75,000 for the Colon Cancer Alliance, and local partners working to fight the disease. For more information, visit www.CCAlliance.org.
