MEXICO CITY – Networks are interrupting their regularly scheduled programming on Saturday to announce that military forces have captured Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, Mexico’s most notorious drug kingpin.
Considered the world’s most wanted man, Guzman was arrested at a Mazatlan hotel Saturday. Guzman broke out of a maximum-security prison in 2001 and has topped the FBI’s most-wanted list ever since then.
Broadcasters Televisa and TV Azteca were covering the latest developments of the arrest on Saturday, as were Canal 22, Excelsior and Milenio Noticias. The story is getting front-page treatment on international sites.
The government held a news conference Saturday afternoon and confirmed Guzman’s arrest in collaboration with U.S. law enforcement agencies. Immediately after the brief conference, networks showed images of Guzman walking to an aircraft that will take him to a maximum-security prison.
