Last night’s Marvel Studios: Assembling a Universe special on ABC may not have provided actual footage from next year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, but it did reveal brand-new concept art from the movie, including first looks at both new members of the team: the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.
“Part of the fun of Avengers the comic is that it’s a shifting roster,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige explained in the special. “If you look at any given run, the team can be quite different, and we want to explore that. So we wanted to bring some new members into the mix.”

Joss Whedon added that the team’s two new members “did not start out being bestest friends with the Avengers [in the comic].” That’s an understatement — when the two characters first appeared in the comic book Marvel Universe, they were supervillains, and their assimilation into the team was a turbulent one marred by public mistrust of their rehabilitation.
The ABC special also featured behind-the-scenes footage from a shoot for the movie in Johannesburg, where a “sequence we’ve been planning for months and months and months” was about to be shot. While the sequence — which is “gonna be awesome,” viewers were told — wasn’t explained in detail, a giant Iron Man hand prop could be glimpsed before concept art showed a fight between the Hulk and someone wearing a suit that resembled the comic book Hulkbuster armor.
“Avengers: Age of Ultron is going to be a little more grown-up than the first one,” Whedon said, “a little scarier, a little funkier, but still, it’s got the same extraordinary characters, a lot of humor, and yes: There will be punching.”
Avengers: Age of Ultron will be released May 1, 2015.
