RICHMOND-

Contra Costa County Sheriff’s deputies say the wreckage of a plane that collided with another plane over the weekend was found in the water off Richmond.

The Cessna plane collided with another plane Sunday afternoon near the San Rafael bridge. The other plane landed in Ione.

Investigators did not confirm Monday why the Sea Fury TMK pilot chose to fly back to Ione, nearly 100 miles from the initial collision over San Pablo Bay.

However, An FAA spokesperson told FOX40 that private pilots generally have a wide discretion on how to respond to air emergencies.

By late Monday afternoon, crews had not taken the Cessna out of the water, and were unsure if the plane was intact or in several pieces.

Marin Austin contributed to this report.
