Whatever you’re expecting from the second Avengers movie, director and writer Joss Whedon wants you to know that it won’t be just like the first one. “Why would you make one movie twice?” he asked. “That seems weird.”
Whedon said that the need to differentiate Avengers: Age of Ultron from its predecessor has led to the introduction of more characters to the movie. “I fiercely dislike the idea of just throwing in more people for the sake of doing that,” he told Empire magazine, “but last time I had all of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes versus one British character actor, and I needed more conflict.”

Not that the presence of the titular villain isn’t enough by itself; “I’m having a blast with Ultron,” Whedon admitted, describing the character as “not a creature of logic [but] a robot who’s genuinely disturbed. We’re finding out what makes him menacing and at the same time endearing and funny and strange and unexpected, and everything a robot never is.”
Other changes between the movies include the sequel’s international locations, as opposed to the New York setting of the original; in addition to shoots in South Africa, South Korea and Italy, the bulk of the movie will be shot in the United Kingdom. “The number of different looks and textures and moods we’re getting from the British locations is stupid awesome,” Whedon said, “because this, palette-wise, is very different. I’m trying to make a different film.”
Avengers: Age of Ultron will be released May 1, 2015.
