California lawmakers spoke out about Saturday’s deadly birthday party shooting in Natomas, which Sacramento Police said has the possibility of being gang-related.

Assembly member Roger Dickinson of District 7 spent years working to reduce youth and gang violence.

“A park is a place where children and adults feel safe,” Dickinson said. “When that is shattered by an incident such as this, I think it shakes our faith.”

Dickinson is currently working on two pieces of legislation pertaining to this topic. He said AB 420 focuses on keeping children in school and on the right track from an early age. AB 1964 is a bill hoping to close a loophole in the “Unsafe handgun law,” which allows modification of legally purchased guns.

He said investing in Califonia’s at-risk youth should be a priority in public expenditures to reduce youth and gang violence.

“This really is not rocket science,” Dickinson said. “We know that if children grow up healthy and are not abused or neglected, then the chances that they are going to go down the wrong path are diminished considerably.”

Saturday at around 5 PM, Sacramento Police said a gunman began shooting at the party at Peregrine Park. He injured six people, including a 7-year-old girl, and killed 29-year-old Jacobe James. Police believe people at the party shot back at gunman, who managed to get away.

A vigil was held for James Sunday night. Fox 40 is told the young girl was released from the hospital, after sustaining a bullet injury to her lower leg.

No one is in custody as of Monday evening. Sacramento Police urge witnesses that left the scene before officers arrived, to call (916) 443-4357.
