Several law enforcement agencies from across the country worked together to find three suspects in the 2013 murder of 19-year-old John Paul Alpert.

Authorities in Nebraska arrested Edward Taylor Anauo, 23, and Jules Clifford Carrillo, 21. New Mexico authorities booked Laura Lee Kenner, 30, in connection to the killing of Alpert, who was a freight train hopper from Palmdale.

“He wanted an adventure,” Lt. Cal Walstad of the Roseville Police Department said. “He was 19 years old, and he wanted to ride the rails.”

Police said Alpert told his parents he was going to “train hop” for the first time in early March 2013. He kept in contact with his parents everyday until suddenly, communication stopped. His parents soon after filed a missing person’s report with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

As he approached Roseville around mid-March, his adventure turned dangerous.

Alpert’s last Facebook message on March 10, 2013 reads: “I’m at the crossroads and for the first time. I’m scared.”

In May, 2013, the Alpert’s body was found by a fisherman near the rails at Dry Creek. An autopsy determined he was murdered.

Fellow freight hoppers said these unfortunate events happen far too often.

“I’ve seen people being run over by trains, and get their legs cut off,” said a woman from Chicago who goes by “Zoe.” She said she has been riding the rails for more than ten years.

Another man who goes by “Trees” said their lifestyle is a dangerous one. But it is one that they chose.

“It’s a risky life, but it’s a risk you know that you take if you know anything about it,” “Trees” said.

Two Roseville detectives were assigned specifically to this case since the murder investigation started in May. Recently, they obtained solid leads connecting the three suspects. Working in conjunction with the Placer County District Attorney’s Office, Union Pacific Railroad Police Department, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, the California Department of Justice, the Farmington (New Mexico) Police Department, and the Nebraska City Police Department, the three were arrested on Friday.

“I didn’t know him, but if you’re riding the trains, that’s another brother or sister that dies for me,” “Trees” said.

The three are being held on no-bail warrants. They will be extradited to Placer County, and held in the Placer County jail, awaiting trial. A court date has not been set yet.
