Each new year is like hitting one big refresh button – and the right new year’s resolution can help the driven mama make the most of the possibilities ahead. A resolution on its own is quite ambiguous. You can sit and make a list of all the nice-to-haves you want or set a number of big goals for the year to see what sticks. However, the reality is that even just the feeling of not making progress can discourage many and eventually lead to giving up. A study found that as much as 80% of individuals abandon their new year’s…

Truthbomb: The road to “having it all” does not happen overnight. It’s an ongoing work in progress that starts with YOU – caring for your overall well-being, gaining clarity, and finding the right balance.  Research has found that women are more likely to take on more responsibilities at home than men. So much so that when the pandemic hit, 1 in 4 women contemplated quitting or downshifting their careers, and in December 2020, 100% of those who left the workforce were women!  But guess what? Moms are human, too, and getting the support they need is crucial in their journey…

Entrepreneur. Mom. Wife. Daughter. Sister. Caregiver. Friend. For many of us, these are the many hats we wear as we go about the thousand tasks we juggle day to day.  But let us ask you this: Where does the Self come in?  As we work towards our goals, making sure we take care of ourselves is paramount. Cars can’t run on empty tanks, and neither can we. Sure, there are going to be days, regardless of plans, when we feel like we’re being pulled every which way. This is when we embrace that wellness wheel and make it our own…

Everyone has good days and bad days – but when the bad days seem to go beyond the threshold you are comfortable with, there’s no shame in needing a little support.  We’ve all been there. Juggling career, parenting, relationships, and having a life can get overwhelming. Maybe all you need is a bit of “me” time or to talk it out with a trusted confidant to bounce back. Sometimes, however, you may need to seek professional guidance. We all need some form of therapy at one point or another – the biggest questions are (1) if it needs to be…

If you’ve been at your job for a while, things can start to feel a little stagnant. And, that’s totally normal. It doesn’t always mean that you need to switch gears or run for the hills – although, sometimes it does call for a reevaluation.  However, once we start feeling those feelings, it starts to become the norm. Our human inclination is to recognize negative experiences with more significance than positive ones. This is also known as the negativity bias.  And despite the (still ongoing) Great Resignation, with inflation rates overtaking wage increases, and concerns about a potential recession, we…

In the age of remote working and The Great Resignation, more and more professionals are looking for greener pastures – but not the same ones the older generations in their lives did. And with the pandemic having negatively affected working moms at a much greater rate than their male counterparts, many women are left wondering, “what now?”  Between balancing remote schooling, working, and still somehow managing a household, many working moms spent the past two plus years reevaluating what’s really important, and what they want their family’s future to look like.  Part of this journey of self-discovery has been rooted…

We touched on this topic back in BC (before-covid times), way before we could have ever anticipated the need for the momcation of all momcations! And if you happened to miss it – TL;DR – here’s the short and sweet of it… MOMCATION  Noun. [mom-kay-shun] A short vacation away from motherhood.  See also: staycation of 2022, burnout solutions.  A momcation is essential to both the well-being of you as well as helping your family become a little less reliant on all you do for them, and hopefully a lot more appreciative, too!  In fact, a study in the National Library…

Don’t worry, mama – if you’re looking to make your summer cooking as healthy as possible, consider alternatives that reduce added sugars and refined grains.

Here’s why:

Added sugars increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and a number of other chronic health problems.
Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health also guides against eating highly processed, refined grains, such as white bread. The more refined a grain, the lower the nutrient content, while unprocessed, whole grains actually help fight diseases in our bodies.

If all of this seems daunting, don’t fret! As you’re preparing for your next outdoor gathering, consider some of these healthy – and easy – substitutes for your normal BBQ recipes.

When we exercise in the heat, our core temperature increases faster and our body has to work harder to regulate our core temperature. The result is that we sweat more, which means our bodies are losing nutrients faster, leading to muscle pain, cramps, and, possibly, heat exhaustion.

What you do before, during, and after your summer workouts can make all the difference in your muscle pain and joint inflammation.

Heat exhaustion is a risk for everyone in the warm, humid summer months, but the risk for pregnant women is even greater. According to the American Heart Association, when you’re pregnant, you have a higher than average body temperature. Your body is already working harder than normal to regulate your body temperature, so temperature regulation in intense summer heat forces your body to work overtime. From dehydration to overheating, the physical impacts not only affect you but also your baby.

So, whether you’re heading outside to play with the kids, continue your exercise routine, enjoy a cookout, or just to read, know the warning signs of heat exhaustion.

A simple form of self-care during this strange time is in how you care for your skin. With so many businesses closed, especially those offering indulgent services like pedicures and facials, my husband and I have implemented a new weekly activity – spa Saturday (or Sunday, depending on how the weekend goes).

So instead of pushing yourself to do more and better, create realistic expectations and do what you can. Ask for help sometimes. Talk to your community. Be the best mom you can be because that is EXACTLY who your kids need.

For the most part, I would consider myself a confident person. I believe in what I’m doing, am not overly influenced by the opinions of others and am largely self-motivated. But in recent weeks, I’ve definitely had moments of self-doubt. With three children at home and learning, along with an overwhelming workload courtesy of COVID-19, it is hard to feel good at much. Some days are better than others and some days are just plain HARD.

News of layoffs and furloughs is all around. And you likely know someone who has been affected. It feels like we are always waiting for the next shoe to drop. I was recently on LinkedIn and saw a post from a colleague, a solo practitioner, who is an active voice within the communications and marketing community. He also has a well-read and influential blog. And he shared that he wants to do his part. For him, that means featuring an out-of-work friend or colleague each week on his blog.

And to me, this is true career leadership in this strange time of uncertainty. We must find ways to come together and support each other despite the current remote work situation. This is just one of many opportunities for career leadership today.

Mother’s Day 2020 is going to look very different from previous years. Traditions of brunch out, family gatherings, or family outings may not be feasible right now. And even though some places are reopening, the kids and your partner may not be able to get away for their typical shopping trip.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate your journey as a mother!

Consider filling your wish list with some of the gift ideas I’ve shared for a refreshing day – and possibly new traditions for years to come.

Peace of mind seems to have gone out the window with spring break plans, end-of-school celebrations, and a sense of normalcy. If you’re like me, you may often find yourself asking how to find joy in the midst of this crisis, how to hold on to peace when everything seems so uncertain, how to hold on to hope on the hardest of days.

If these thoughts and feelings sound familiar, you’re not alone, mama – and it’s ok to feel this way! But, that doesn’t mean you have to give up on maintaining peace of mind (and sanity!).

Check out some of my go-to strategies for tapping into joy on my hardest days.

Every parent wants to instill leadership in their children. From the example, they set the expectations they have; it’s about creating an environment that facilitates opportunities for growth, failure, learning, and accountability. Now that we are spending the majority of our time at home, I see the opportunity.
