NEW YORK –

The NBA has banned Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life and is fining him $2.5 million — the maximum fine allowed under the league’s constitution — NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said Tuesday.

That ban would, among other things, keep Sterling from games, practices, and from going to Clippers facilities.

The NBA has determined that recorded, racist remarks released over the weekend  by TMZSports were those of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said Tuesday. Sterling reportedly acknowledged to Silver that “it was his voice on the tape.” After being asked whether Sterling had anything else to say, Silver said he “has not expressed to me, directly, any other views.”

Silver said racist remarks attributed to Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling were “deeply offensive and harmful.” Asked by a reporter whether someone should lose their team because of private remarks, Silver said regardless of whether they were expressed in private, “they are now public and they reflect his views.”

Silver said he would ask the league’s board of governors to “force a sale” of the Clippers, and that he would do “everything in my power” to ensure that a sale happens.
