Taking risks and overcoming challenges are fundamental to the thrill and satisfaction of sea kayaking. When you paddle beyond sheltered waters and into the open ocean, however, due diligence and thorough preparation are not optional; they are essential to your safety. It takes well-developed judgment to know when you're just stretching the envelope and when you're bursting through it. And when your risk assessments fail you, self-rescue and assisted-rescue techniques are not supplementary skills - they will save your life.In this indispensable handbook, two premier kayaking instructors help you prepare your body, your boat, and your brain to meet this demanding sport's challenges. You'll learn how to make the right decisions in tough situations, choose the right safety and rescue equipment, and develop the skills and stamina you'll need to rescue yourself and others under perilous conditions. You'll also learn to: plan your trip and assess the risks ahead of time; prepare for tides, currents, and local weather and wave effects; paddle in wind, heavy seas, and tidal currents; navigate in rough weather; communicate during emergencies; and perform a wide variety of self and assisted rescues.

This was bought as laugh for my brother who was in the process of making a home built canoe from 2 sheets of plywood and a plan off the internet. He is notoriously bad at constructing anything so thought this would be very apt.
Actually turns out to be a very informative book!

Great book, very informative, something in there for everyone no matter what level you`re at.

This book is very readable. It contains clear photographs of kayaking techniques all clearly explained. The photos are in black and white with some line drawings but this does not detract from the appreciation of the book.
As a newcomer to kayaking (BCU1) I found the book useful and informative. It contains several anecdotes about situations in which you could find yourself in trouble and what the solution should have been. Recommended but remember to get out and kayak!

Wanted a kayak book just on rescues. This book fitted the bill! Good pictures and well written. Not the best overall kayak book but good if you're looking to understand rescues and how to deal with them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference for sea kayaker
Reviewed in the United States on 10 June 2009
This book excels where Sea Kayker Magazine's Deep Trouble fell short. This is a volume with fewer stories and presents in-depth and comprehensive coverage of just about all topics on kayaking technique and strategy. When I read it first, I did not pay too much attention to the first chapter on judgment and leadership. Now I am re-reading it and finding it very interesting.

Prior to this volume, I've read several kayak books by kayaking oracles (Dowd, Foster, Hutchinson) and this one definitely presents multiple topics that are either not covered elsewhere at all of are not covered elsewhere in this detail.

Even when topics presented in this book are redundant with other sources, the relative emphasis on safety rather than efficiency is new and I found it compelling.

This is not a huge manual but it contains excellent information for anyone wanting to learn how to properly plan kayak outings, even for advance / experienced paddlers. Many paddling schools recommend that their students read this book before an upcoming course. I strongly recommend it to all.

Another great book to have on the coffee-table. While it is recommended that you take safety lessons if you are going to be out on the water - this author gives you lots of tips, real stories, and lots to think about. Passively reading books on safety is a great time for you and your family to get the fundamentals of safety drilled into your brain before you get on the water - this book is the tool you need!!!
