Elk Grove Council Member and mayoral candidate Sophia Scherman announced volunteers from her campaign will make phone calls to support passage of AB1964 and SB1540.

AB1964, sponsored by Democratic Assemblymember Mariko Yamada and SB1540, sponsored by Democratic Senator Loni Hancock, would respectively protect religious dress and grooming in the workplace to prevent discrimination for all religions and addresses educational curriculum issues important to the Sikh community. Specifically SB1540 would include the the history and contributions Sikh-Americans in the state's public school curriculum.

“The Sikh community has become a special and important part of our nation,” Scherman said. “After the recent violence we need to stand with them and help prevent discrimination against them."

Calls will be made from volunteers at Scherman’s campaign office at 8145 Elk Grove Blvd # 20 starting at 6:30 p.m., Monday, August 27. Members of American Sikh PAC will also be in attendance.
