A woman found a piece of a meteorite and she didn’t have to go very far – it landed in her backyard in Novato.

“It sounded like a heavy pine cone bouncing around on the roof. But there’s no pine trees anywhere around my house,” Lisa Webber said.

That sound turned out to be a meteorite that hit Webber’s house.

“It’s kind of like a big fat fig, five centimeters long, three tall, three centimeters wide. It’s about 63 grams,” Webber said.

It happened in Novato on Wednesday, and Webber probably wouldn’t have heard it if not for a rain delay of the San Francisco Giants playoff game.

“I turned on the TV and there was still a rain delay so I turned it off and said OK I’m going to have some quiet.”

A couple of days later, Webber searched her yard and her roof.

“When I was up on the ladder the gutter was fine. But I looked down and thought ‘that’s a funny looking rock,’” Webber said.

So she took it to her neighbor’s house and ran a couple of tests.

“When the magnet stuck and we both looked at each other and went whoa and we got excited.”

And she should be, because this rock means big money.

“This piece could be worth 5 to 10 thousand bucks,” said meteorite expert Robert Haag.

Haag said there’s still more of this pricey rock to be found.

“There’s a million bucks worth of stuff out there and i mean a million bucks worth of stuff. You just have to go out and find it,” Haag said.

Despite the potential dollars, Weber said she’s donating the rock to science.

“NASA gets the first crack at it … It’s not about money, this is about science,” Webber said.
