Seven seek Davis' vacated postion
With a vacancy to fill on the Elk Grove City Council, a special forum will be held this Saturday night for the seven individuals vying for appointment.
As a result of his election as Mayor, Gary Davis vacated the District 4 seat he occupied since 2006 last month when he was assumed his new mayoral position. Last month the city council decided that as a first step in the process to fill the vacancy, it would seek qualified applicants for appointment for the two years remaining on the seat.
A forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters will be held at the Elk Grove City Hall Council Chambers this Saturday night from 6 to 8 p.m. Interested members of the public can submit questions to the panel moderator for response by the applicants.
As of this afternoon there have been 10 applicants submitted but only seven have meet the residency and voter registration requirement. A complete list of all the applicants as of this afternoon's 5 p.m. deadline is available here.
The council could move as early as next Wednesday's regular meeting to place into nomination an appointment. If a majority of the four-member council cannot agree on any one appointment nominee, a special election will be scheduled to fill the vacancy.
At last month's sole meeting on Dec. 12, Council Member Jim Cooper urged the appointment process as a cost saving measure while his council colleague Pat Hume argued democracy and the interests of Elk Grove voters would be better served with a special election.

I trust EVERY member of our city council will be present to meet and hear each of these interested candidates.
How else would they be able to make an informed and educated determination of who will best support Dist 4 and the city? This will be thee only vetting of candidates other than at the councuil meeting when the decision is to be made.
If they don't show for the forum, they shouldn't vote @ decision time. Otherwise, it would be obvious that back room politics are in play. - Right??
