AMC‘s Halt and Catch Fire begins its story in 1983, just as the personal computer boom is beginning to take shape. It’s one year after IBM released its PC and Joe McMillan, an ex-IBM sales guy, wants in on the game.
VIDEO: AMC’s ‘Halt and Catch Fire’ First Trailer Debuts
The Hollywood Reporter debuts a first-look featurette spotlighting Joe, played by Pushing Daisies star Lee Pace. Watch the new footage and descriptors for Joe range from “slick” and “laser-focused” to “handsome” and “an outcast.” It’s that level of uncertainty surrounding the character that leads Pace to call his alter ego, one in desperate need of reinvention, “an enigma.”
“I love Joe McMillan — and I hate him,” admits Pace. “I hate the things that he does, but I’m inspired by him.”
“Everybody is potential prey for Joe,” adds executive producer Mark Johnson. Showrunner Jonathan Lisco sums up Joe’s mission in a nutshell: “to build a computer faster and better than the IBM PC.” If Joe fails in that task — in which he’s recruited Gordon Clark (Scoot McNairy) and Cameron Howe (Mackenzie Davis) to assist — “he will be that fraud that he feared,” says Lisco.
Watch the featurette below.
Halt and Catch Fire premieres Sunday, June 1 at 10 p.m. on AMC.
