SACRAMENTO-
Sheriff’s Deputies say most criminals aren’t into gun-running or buying weapons from the store.
They are getting guns in home robberies. Our hiding places of closets, night stand drawers and under the mattress aren’t fooling thieves. In Sacramento County, there are 40 break-ins a day.
“We have seen a steady increase in the number of firearms taken during residential burglaries and business burglaries, and they have been increasing over the past five or six years,” said Sgt. Jason Ramos, a spokesman for the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department.
Nick Orndorff, a Rancho Cordova resident, has had his home broken into seven or eight times. With each burglary, he lost more and more of his gun collection. Fifty or more guns now in the hands of criminals.
“I think my guns have been used in crimes either against people. Robberies or whatever,” said Orndorff.
That breaks his heart, especially since he though he was being a responsible gun owner by purchasing small safes.
“It’s a false sense of security because we are even seeing small safes being taken during burglaries. People need to get these big several hundred pound ones that make it nearly impossible to take,” said Jason Ramos.
Bolting the safes to the ground is the best way to protect your guns.
The gun debate with rage on indefinitely. Until then, the best way to protect the community is to lock up your firearms to keep them out of peoples hands that shouldn’t have them.
