SACRAMENTO –

“Liking” or “Following” the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department could help solve crimes and catch criminals.

In the last two weeks, the Department has launched Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube pages and posted videos of unsolved crimes with the hopes they can reach someone on social media who recognizes the suspects.

“It was part of the Sheriff’s strategic plan coming into 2012 to really develop a social media process,” explained Jason Ramos, Sheriff’s Department spokesperson.

Considering millions of people spend hours on social media the move makes sense.

“We recognize it’s a sign of the times and it’d be foolish of us not to use (social media) as an investigative tool,” said Ramos, “It only takes one set of eyes to recognize that individual and do the right thing and contact us.”

Ramos added the public can expect to see more videos, “If (the case is) still unsolved we’re hoping that somebody will recognize these people.”

That means posting videos from older crimes. One that was just released this week is surveillance video from a crime that happened in March. In the video, two men are clearly seen knocking on doors looking for an unoccupied home. When the pair found one the video shows the suspects walking stolen items to their car.

“You can very clearly see these guys’ faces,” said Ramos, “I’d be hard pressed somebody seeing this, who knows these people wouldn’t recognize them.”

The burglary happened in the Antelope area. If you recognize the suspects in any of the videos contact the Sheriff’s Department at (916) 874-5115.
