Theologian Trading Cards Misc. Supplies – November 24, 2012

4.5 out of 5 stars 42 ratings

Patterned after the all-American baseball card, Theologian Trading Cards provide essential information about the major teachers, leaders, and trouble-makers throughout the history of the Church. At a glance you will have access to information regarding 288 important figures in church history, including when and where they lived, their contribution to the church, and enduring significance.

Each figure has been placed on the roster of one of 15 “theological” or “historical” teams; this aids readers in discovering the practical, chronological, and theological connections between figures. Examples include the Orthodoxy Dodgers (heretics); St. James Padres (Church Fathers of the Patristic Era); and the Wittenberg Whistle-blowers (Early Reformers and later Lutheran Church).

Theologian Trading Cards are perfect for students taking a church history course who want a memorable study aid to help them retain important information about select individuals in the church, as well as non-students who just want to learn or want to begin a hobby of card collecting.

Review

"I first saw this idea some time back and thought Norman Jeune's idea was fantastic. Not only because I loved baseball cards and had plenty of them -- and that my mother threw them all away -- but because some conversation around theologians by young theologians is important. I pray these cards will help educate students and then lead them to read the greats. I'll trade you a Luther for a Barth!"
-Scot McKnight, Karl A. Olsson Professor in Religious Studies, North Park University

"These Theologian Trading Cards are a great way to learn more about Christian theology. Combining pithy facts about great thinkers past and present with the appeal of the trading card format makes these instant collectors items with a high theology-nerd value. Never has Church History been so much fun!"
-Oliver D. Crisp, Professor of Systematic Theology, Fuller Theological Seminary

"Theologian Trading Cards makes me MAD, for two reasons: 1) I didn't think of it first, and 2) I'm not one of the theologians! But seriously, this is fantastic. 300 theologians and philosophers broken into 15 teams. Everyone from Wittgenstein to Augustine to Bacon to Ephrem the Syrian. The set is helpful and fun."

These cards are just too much fun. If you love theology, want to review theologian’s highlights quickly, or just want to learn, these cards are more fun than any cards should be.

There is nothing like reminders of history. They bring to remembrance all sort of feelings, when you first read about religious events, etc. With these "fact" cards, many heroes of the faith are put into perspective in a long line of religious events. There are even a few villains thrown in for good measure. I am going to try to find a binder to put them into, so that they can be preserved.

A gift for a clergy friend who appreciated the cards quite a bit. Good summaries of many theologians and theological positions.

I purchased two boxes of these cards and received them in the mail yesterday. There are about 300 cards per box. I mixed them all up and am going to give them out in Christmas cards to church members. They would make good stocking stuffers and Sunday School prizes too.

The quality of the card stock is good, the cards are pretty thick so I didn't have problems with bended corners. It was interesting to see photos of people I have been reading about for years, such as Heidegger, Bultmann and Niebur.

The think that author did a pretty good job at picking who to include. Of course I would have like to have seen certain people included that were left out, but I am sure there is no way to make everyone happy. I look at it as an opportunity for the author to do a second set of cards and include those where are well known and have been extremely influential, such as Francis Schaeffer, Norm Geisler and C.S. Lewis. Better yet, maybe the author will do a set of Apologist trading cards as a follow-up. Each box does come with six blank cards so I can technically create my own cards for Schaeffer, Geisler and even my pastor (!)

I'll trade you my Calvin and an Abraham Kuyper for your Tertullian and John Darby card ;0)

Here goes: forgive my loose and stream of consciousness description. 4 stars, despite it being a great set, for what the two criticisms below entail. I think it speaks to a kind of laziness in the completion of this project before they were sold. Afterwards you'll find a more positive description.

The lack of pictures/photos for many of the cards, as so many others have noted, gives the sense that these cards may be lacking in other ways too. See my copied text from the Moody card as an example.
D.L. MOODY: "(1837-1899) Significance: After several years of organizing a large Bible study teaching ministry and serving as a chaplain during World War I"... what?! WWI occurred during the 19th century?
What other errors lie hidden in these cards?

Still, they are a very nice set. The pictures and card thickness are good quality. I enjoy the quick references and find them helpful for my current project. I think the "teams" are a bit cheesy, but they are actually somewhat handy for quickly locating people. And there are a lot of them. I have no idea who at least a third of these people are. I haven't tried to go through and see how pc they are, as in how represented women and racial minorities are (I live in the States so I mean people who recognize themselves as non-whites). From my recollection they are mostly "dead white guys" but what the hell, it's Western theology. That's what you get. I do recollect that James Cone and Gustavo Gutierrez are included, as well as a few women, Simone de Beauvoir comes to mind. Which reminds me, they include a group of philosophers, which I thought was a nice addition. The teams include mystics, eastern orthodox folks, and even heretics. The box states, "A fun way to learn church history and theology" and I agree. Thank you Norman Jeune III.

A friend of mine of similar ilk and I are having a good time reading the information on the cards. I would possibly have been a mite more verbose in some cards and less in anothers but generally we have high cudos for the cards.
