Michael Sam is back on the football field today, as the first openly gay NFL player begins training camp for the St. Louis Rams.

“I’m going back to work,” Sam told Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts in a segment that aired Monday morning, with the rest to air on espnW in the coming weeks. He added that he lost 12 pounds beforehand. “I’m doing my job. Don’t you worry!”
Sam expanded on how he felt during the NFL draft, when he was picked later than expected, but was reassured during the process by boyfriend Vito Cammisano. “I was kind of second-guessing myself, ‘Maybe football turned it’s back on me,’ ” he noted. “I was like, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t have done what I did.’ You know? I had so many emotions going in my head. And then I felt a touch over my shoulder, and it was Vito, and I was just, I was like, ‘I don’t care what happens. I know I did the right thing in my heart. And whatever happens, happens. I’m just going to move forward.’ … I’m just so excited to finally get the opportunity to do what I love. Not a lot of people can say that.”

Of receiving the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYs last Wednesday, he reflected, “There are so many others [who are] well deserving of that award, so I share this award with everyone who has the courage to tell their parents, to tell their peers, to tell their friends, anyone, that, ‘Hey, I’m comfortable [with] who I am. I don’t care what you think. This is who I am.’ “
