Asian Fortune: Teach for America launches #AAPI initiative

Teach for American AAPI InitiativeAn initiative has been launched by the non-profit Teach for America to help underserved Asian American and Pacific Islander students, reports  Asian Fortune.

The program is being headed by Sarah Ha who comes fro the Asian and Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund and who experienced first hand the negative impact of educational inequalities when she was a student.

Ha was born in America but spent much of her young years in Korea. When she entered the American school system with limited knowledge of English, she said her teachers gave her little help mastering her English and lowered their standards for her.

She says her target will be the sub-populations that get little attention from the main stream. She’s referring to Cambodian and Laotian students who only have less than a 40 percent graduation rate from high school. She’s hoping to assist Pacific Islanders such as Native Hawaiians (49.3%), Guamanian (53%) and Tongans (57.9%) who are also behind in their graduation rates.

She can read more about Ha’s dreams for Teach for America in Asian Fortune.
