The recently established Greenwich International Film Festival, which boasts a board of directors that includes former first daughter Jenna Bush Hager and New York Yankees star Mark Teixeira, has set its first edition for June 4-7, 2015. The fest’s board also named named veteran film commentator Elvis Mitchell as its “marquee director.”
Mitchell, a former New York Times journalist and Harvard lecturer who currently curates Film Independent at LACMA and hosts NPR’s “The Treatment” on KCRW, is tasked with creating “a long-lasting film event that will benefit the filmmaking community, the Greenwich community and the global community.”
The fest also announced a charity partnership with UNICEF and put out a call for entries, aiming to select a slate of roughly 25 films that will include narrative and documentary features and shorts.
The alliance with UNICEF is intended to further the fest’s objectives by “harnessing the power of film to serve the greater good.” GIFF will work with the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to support OneMinutesJr., a workshop that aims to teach underprivileged young people how to make films and, in so doing, express themselves and make their voices heard.
The festival board said in a release, “Given Greenwich’s strong ties to the financial world, it felt natural to build a model that makes the most of those connections to benefit both individual filmmakers and a charity everyone believes in.”
