SpectreVision, the shingle run by Elijah Wood, Daniel Noah and Josh C. Waller that specializes in horror fare, have set their sights on the zombie genre with Curse the Darkness, their latest producing effort.
Jorge Michel Grau is directing the project which has a screenplay by Brandon Maurice Williams. Wood, Noah and Waller will serve as producers.
The movie has an Oct. 27 start in Louisiana and is currently casting.
The producers are calling Darkness an “anthropological zombie film,” and will take its cues from purported real-life roots of zombie, which involved chemically-induced slavery widely practiced by plantation owners around the Haitian Revolution of 1803.

According to the producers, Darkness is “set against the modern day backdrop of undocumented workers laboring in the Louisiana sugarcane fields, the story is a terrifying look at the systematic exploitation of the labor force by large corporate entities, as well as a portrait of the plight of undocumented workers in the United States.”
“We always said we wanted to stay away from the zombie genre, as it’s been so well covered, but when we read Brandon’s script, we encountered a take on the genre that simply had to be realized,” said Wood in a statement. “Curse the Darkness is both a chilling exercise in horror and an incisive polemic against the conditions of illegal immigrants in this country.”
Williams was working on Rampart where he was being mentored by the director, Oren Moverman. He met Noah on the shoot and gave him an early draft of his script.
Grau made his debut with We Are What We Are, which was a hit on the festival circuit and had his American debut with the upcoming thriller Big Sky, starring Bella Thorne, Kyra Sedgewick and Frank Grillo.
