SACRAMENTO-

The California Water Resources and Control voted Tuesday to enact fines for water wasters.

“There are communities that are running out of water, and are having lines from other communities sent to them,” Board Chair Felicia Marcus said. “They’re bathing out of buckets.”

The fine can go up to $500 each day waste occurs. Some businesses say it could financially ruin them.

“Basically, what they are saying is you can’t pressure wash a house before you paint it. You can’t remove graffiti off walls, and I don’t know of you folks know but businesses get fined if they don’t remove graffiti after a certain amount of time,” Dan Cosgrove said. Cosgrove is the president of Welcome Building Maintenance, a small power washing business based in Concord.

The board felt the state wasn’t doing enough to conserve water during the drought.
