SACRAMENTO COUNTY-
A 14-inch water main break, sent thousands of gallons of water a minute pumping through the earth; spewing into the sky from a now-covered four feet wide hole in the ground at McClellan Air Park.
It started as a leak, then quickly turned into a break.
Ed Formosa from Sacramento Suburban Water District says,”When you have a break like that underneath a hard surface, the water will get out wherever it can, in the process it washed out a lot of material underneath.”
While this doesn’t look like a big open space on the surface, below ground, it’s like a car-sized cavity.
To add to the challenge, this former Air Force Base is a clean up site. Anyone who excavates here must have a permit.
All the material that that they remove has to be taken over and disposed of and treated like it’s contaminated, even if it’s not.
