Missing Demographics in CNN/ORC Polling: The Importance of “N/A”

By Dave Winnyk

DISCLAIMER **I am not a statistician or political pollster. I am a blogger who found information that peeked my curiosity.**

News giant CNN and Opinion Research Corporation (ORC) released two polls surveying a sample group of Americans by phone on their feelings on the upcoming presidential primaries. The media has pulled some of the stats out of the poll to provide some political insight in numbers as we run up to the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primaries such as: Donald Trump polling at 12%, Jeb Bush surges up by 13%, and Hillary Clinton holds an almost impossible 40 point lead.

This article is going to talk about something different. It’s about how two letters are opening a number of questions on CNN/ORC’s polling methods: N/A. It is an abbreviation meaning “Not Applicable,” “Not Applied,” or “Not Available”; and it appears roughly 2,500 times in the demographic breakdowns in the June CNN/ORC poll on the presidential primaries. For a poll that claims it’s total base as “All Americans,” the results seem to leave many American demographics “N/A.”

Planning to vote for Bernie Sanders?

I just saw another enthusiastic post going around, encouraging people to vote for the man, but missing an important fact.

Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton are both running as Democrats.

The party will use YOUR votes to decide how many Democratic Party delegates from your state go to the Democratic National Convention and vote on who represents the party in the general election (what this means varies by state; see this article for an explanation). This means that in order for you to see Bernie Sanders in the White House, you must see him beat Hillary Clinton at the DNC.

If you do not vote for Bernie Sanders in the primary, you will NOT be able to vote for him as president, because only one person will represent the Democratic Party. If you want to see Bernie Sanders in the White House, again, you cannot wait for the general election, because he will have been knocked out of the race.

Remember to get out and register to vote in your state’s primary election!

“As Goes New Hampshire, So Does The Presidency”, Bernie Sanders gaining ground in New Hampshire

http://morningconsult.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/150502_crosstabs_mc_NH_v1_AD.pdf Bernie Sanders 32%, Hillary Clinton 44% in latest New Hampshire opinion poll. Bernie Sanders has long trailed Hillary Clinton in many opinion polls, some from late May have him trailing as much as 60%. Although there is a long way until the election and polls can change considerably, Bernie Sanders has been gaining on Hillary Clinton in many key states. First Wisconsin and now New Hampshire. As the word continues to spread and Bernie Sanders is given more time to spread his ideas, Bernie will become more and more of a contender. Spread the word and help Bernie Sanders continue to gain on Hillary Clinton. Bernie Sanders 2016!

For More Children Than Many Care To Admit First and Potentially Only Meal of The Day School Lunch is a Reality

For many children school is a lot more than education. For some it is a place to get away from home. For others its a secure meal. It’s easy to shrug that off and pretend it doesn’t happen. In the United States today over 16 MILLION children live in poverty. Meaning their families live off of less than $23,000 a year. Living a fulfilling life is incredibly difficult living on so little. It may be more than many people in the world are allotted, but for a family living in the richest nation in the richest period in history. That is absurd. We need serious economic overhaul and no politician other than Bernie Sanders will provide Americans with the economic tools they need to succeed. Bernie Sanders 2016!

5 Myths Quashed by Bernie Sanders Himself

By Dave Winnyk

image

On Wednesday morning, WAMU radio host Diane Rehm interviewed presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders. He spoke with the usual passion and honesty people expect from the 73 year old activist politician. In the Q&A session featuring questions from the host, calls from listeners, tweets, and emails, Sanders got a chance to take down a few myths that have been circling around the Internet.

1. He will run as an independent candidate if he loses the primaries

Sanders swiftly rebuffed the idea of running as an Independent: “No, the answer is absolutely not. I am in the democratic caucus and primary process… I will not run outside of that.” And it makes sense as well. If Sanders were to leave this option open, it would give Democrats who fear a Republican take over an out when it comes to nominating Sanders. He is betting it all on the Democratic ticket. “I have been in the Democratic caucus in the house and the senate since the first day I took office.”

2. He can’t compete without billions in corporate backing

One of the callers to the show asked “How does [Sanders] plan to deal with Republican Opposition?”

“I’m the ranking member on the budget committee. I do know what the Republican Party stands for. In the budget that they passed last month, they called for massive tax breaks for billionaires and terrible cuts in medicare, medicaid, education, [and] nutrition programs. And by the way they raised taxes on lower-income people.”

3. Sanders champions a broken social security system that builds the national debt

The myth, Social Security is broken, is rhetorically repeated by GOP politicians. Sanders shot it down:

“You’re hearing a lot of untruths about social security out there. As the founder of the ‘Defending Social Security’ caucus in the Senate let me tell you what’s going on. Number one, social security is not going broke. There’s two and a half trillion dollars in a trust fund can pay out every benefit to every eligible American for the next eighteen years. Number two, social security obviously doesn’t add to the deficit because it’s funded independently by the payroll tax.”

4. He has Dual-Citizenship with Israel

A strange myth about Sanders is that he has dual citizenship with Israel. (How long till the media start asking for his birth certificate?) A supposed document surfaced on the internet that claimed to reveal a list of dual-citizens in congress.

“I don’t know where that [idea] came from. I am an American citizen… No, that’s some of the nonsense that goes on in the internet.”

5. Electing a progressive president will fix the country

Campaigns can often elevate candidates to points where their promises reach outside the realities of Washington. No, Bernie Sanders cannot fix the crippling inequality facing our country by himself. He said throughout the interview there were “no magic solutions” to many of the complicated problems facing America today. However, he does want to lead a political revolution that can change the money-culture of Washington that could spur on real change.

“One of the main tenants of my campaign is the understanding that corporate America, the billionaire class, Wall Street, has so much power right now over what goes on in Washington that nothing significant will be done unless we build a strong grassroots mass movement… Which tells congress they have to start representing ordinary people and not just the people on top.”
