AMC has ordered another pilot, potentially beefing up its thinning originals catalog. The network announced Friday that the geopolitical drama White City earned an order, joining AMC Studios’ Knifeman and Scott Free’s Galyntine on the docket.
Set in Afghanistan and following a group of Western diplomats and journalists, the script comes from novelist Nick McDonell and politico John Dempsey — with Chris Mundy and Tom Freston also serving as executive producers.
“This is a story born from a creative team in Chris, John, Nick and Tom that has both an incredibly deep understanding of one of the most misunderstood regions of the world and a fantastic sense of how to tell a compelling story about the lives of people who are drawn to the world’s hot spots,” said AMC exec vp original programming, production and digital content Joel Stillerman. “It’s not a war story; it’s a character story that will tackle some of the most complicated issues of our time.”
White City focuses on “war junkie” Jon Liston who’s spent the better part of a decade in Kabul. The pilot finds him overreaching his bounds to speak with insurgents, forcing him to a crossroads.
AMC has been very busy of late. With Mad Men recently wrapping production on its final seven episodes, slated for 2015, and Breaking Bad ending last year, the network has already given a sophomore order to the yet-to-premiere Better Call Saul. Martial arts drama Badlands also received a straight-to-series order.
AMC Studios is producing White City.
