For those wondering how Josh Trank ended up directing one of Disney’s many Star Wars spinoffs, Simon Kinberg has shared more about how the Chronicle director happened to be hired by Lucasfilm.
Kinberg, of course, is responsible for the screenplay to Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot from Fox next year and is also working on Star Wars projects for Lucasfilm, including serving as executive producer of Star Wars Rebels, the new series launching on Disney XD in October.
Talking to the website /Film, Kinberg said that he “spoke very highly of Josh to the Lucasfilm guys,” saying that the studio was interested in him because “he, like [Rian Johnson, director of Star Wars Episode VIII] and like [Gareth Edwards, director of another Star Wars spinoff title] is very much that next-generation filmmaker. He comes from a background of making a big movie without a big budget.”
That’s important, Kinberg explained to the website, not because future Star Wars movies will be low-budget — “They’ll have huge budgets,” he clarified — but because it mirrors the creation of the original space opera. “The sort of tradition that George [Lucas] started was somebody that came from making American Graffiti to making a huge science fiction movie,” he said. “There was some of that sort of vibe I know Lucasfilm likes about these new filmmakers.”
Take that as another sign that Lucasfilm is going back to basics with the new Star Wars movies.
