The Howlin' Brothers: Modern Voices from the American South

The Howlin’ Brothers stopped by WUWM@Nite to chat with Trapper Schoepp about their ties to American roots music, as well as the state of Nashville’s music scene.

The three-piece string band found inspiration after moving down south from the band's birthplace, Ithaca, NY. Guitarist Jared Green, originally from Bayfield, WI, said they developed their craft in Music City through old time picking parties and field recordings discovered in libraries.

Nashville also seeped into their lyrical approach. “I don’t think I could have written those things if I didn’t move to Nashville,” said upright bassist, Ben Plasse. “It was just moving to the South and hearing people use that kind of stuff in everyday conversation.”

While the trio are not biological brothers, their musical chemistry is undeniable.

Fiddler Ian Craft attributes this camaraderie to “being friends, living and breathing this life. You don’t think about it anymore. It’s just a thing that happens.”

The trio performed the following off their new release, Trouble:

1. “Monroe”

2. “The World Spinning Around”

3. “Boogie”
