ROCKLIN –
Three giant crosses were erected just of highway 65 in Rocklin today at the Destiny Christian Center. The tallest of the three crosses is 40 feet high, and all will be lighted with LED lights.
Greg Fairrington, founder and Pastor at the 2,000 member Assembly of God church, says it may become a landmark because it’s a gateway to the community.
“God has a destiny for everyone and we hope the crosses will lead them to him,” said Fairrington.
Initially there were concerns by neighbors that the lighted crosses would cause light pollution and keep them up at night. Part of the approval included putting colored balloons on a crane to see if they could be spotted. But Fairrington said trees screened the balloons from view. The monuments got all the necessary permits from city officials.
A cross also sits atop the 65 foot church – much higher than the new crosses – but that one doesn’t have the same lighting treatment.
The lighting on the new crosses will have a halo effect, according to Fairrington, and won’t be harsh as some fear. He said part of the crosses will be illuminated Friday night, but more testing and installation work must be finished before they are fully up and running.
