After a long and intense meeting that started Thursday evening and stretched into early Friday morning, the Sacramento City Unified School District Board of Trustees voted to close seven elementary schools.

Washington, C.P. Huntington, Mark Hopkins, C.B. Wire, Fruit Ridge, Joseph Bonnheim and Maple elementary schools will close.

The meeting originally slated to discuss the closure of 10 schools, but district Superintendent Jonathan Raymond removed three from the list: Susan B. Anthony, James Marshall and Bret Harte.

Two others, Tahoe and Mark Twain elementary schools, will be discussed at a March 7 meeting.

Parents have fought against the plan since it was announced in mid January. The district maintained their stance that closing under-enrolled campuses would save the district millions of dollars. Many parents and community members felt the schools were unfairly targeted because of their location in lower-income neighborhoods.
