Cannes — Music Box has acquired U.S. rights to surprise German box-office hit Oh Boy.
Beta Cinema announced the deal for the low-budget dramedy about a day in the life of a Berlin slacker here on May 22.
The black-and-white film recently beat Cloud Atlas in the best film honor race at the Lolas, the German equivalent of the Oscars.
The U.S. deal is the latest for the movie after sales to all major European territories, as well as Japan and Australia/New Zealand.
Said Music Box managing director Ed Arentz: “We’re thrilled to be working on one of the most entertaining debut films in some time. Writer/director Jan Ole Gerster has created a seemingly off-hand Berlin-set Catcher in the Rye and found a perfect lead in Tom Schilling.”
He added: “With the release of this film in the U.S., we disavow any responsibility for the likely increased influx of American slackers to Berlin.”
Oh Boy has been a big German art house surprise of the past year, grossing more than $2 million in the country alone.
Beta Cinema also recently struck a deal with Music Box for Generation War.
