A massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary left parents, teachers and just about everyone across the country questioning school safety, now the Galt Joint Union Elementary School District is doing the same.

Galt Police Chief Bill Bowen asked the school board to consider gun safety training for school faculty and Wednesday night, that was passed.

“Unfortunately, in our current times, we have a lot of kids showing up with different weapons. Some of those are handguns,” said Galt Police Chief Bill Bowen

School staff would learn different types of guns and how to handle them.

“If in fact we are in some kind of fight do you know what to do with it. Do you know what’s going to happen with that weapon,” said Bowen

“You never know when a gun can end up on a campus,” said district President Kevin Papineau

Earlier this year, one Galt student brought what looked like a handgun to school.

Fortunately, it only shot plastic pellets, but it was enough for staff to push for the training.

“My first impression is that it would be helpful. There is certainly no harm in educating our staff and our employees,” said Papineau

The district doesn’t have policies on what teachers should do if a student brings a gun on campus, but they hope that will soon change.
