Variance Films and FilmBuff have acquired The History of Future Folk, the debut feature from J. Anderson Mitchell and Jeremy Kipp Walker.
The comedy, which debuted at last year’s Los Angeles Film Festival and was nominated for Film Independent’s Find Your Audience Award, tells of an alien from another planet, played by Nils d’Aulaire, who decides to form a bluegrass band instead of destroying Earth.
The film is a Maida Vale Films Production, directed by Mitchell and Walker, written by Mitchell and produced by Walker, Jon Bulette, Andrew Goldman and Smokey Nelson.
Variance will release the film theatrically in the U.S. beginning at New York City’s Cinema Village on May 31 and Los Angeles’ Sundance Sunset Cinemas on June 7, with live appearances by its musical space alien heroes at select shows. A national theatrical rollout will then continue through the summer. FilmBuff will release the film on iTunes and across all digital platforms June 4.
“Unexpectedly finding a movie like this is the best part of working in film,” said Dylan Marchetti of Variance Films. “The script is great, the actors are great, and the music is absolutely fantastic.”
“A truly unique and trailblazing film like this is such a welcome treat,” said FilmBuff head of acquisitions Steve Beckman.
