After a bumpy road, Lifetime is finally revealing the first glimpse at its upcoming Aaliyah biopic.
The film, Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, stars Alexandra Shipp as the eponymous singing star. Zendaya Coleman had been attached to the role but dropped out just before production began amid reports that Aaliyah’s family did not approve of the project.
The trailer highlights Aaliyah’s signature fashion sense and dance moves. At the end of the trailer, the images turn black-and-white, providing a haunting reminder of Aaliyah’s untimely death.
Aaliyah, known for her hits “Try Again” and “Rock the Boat,” was killed in a plane crash in 2001 at the age of 21. She also appeared in several films, including Queen of the Damned.
The biopic airs Nov. 15 on Lifetime.
