The Los Angeles Film Festival, which kicks off June 13 with Pedro Almodovar’s I’m So Excited, has selected The Way, Way Back, starring a cast headed by Steve Carell, as its closing night film.
Directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, Oscar winners for their screenplay for The Descendants, the film, a coming-of-age story about a 14-year old boy played by Liam James, also stars Toni Collette, Allison Janney, AnnaSophia Robb, Sam Rockwell and Maya Rudolph and will be released by Fox Searchlight July 5.
The festival, produced by Film Independent, also announced Wednesday that its gala screenings will include Only God Forgives, directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and starring Ryan Gosling, and Ryan Coogler’s debut feature Fruitvale Station.

The festival, which takes place in downtown Los Angeles at L.A. Live, will screen nearly 200 feature films, shorts and music videos.
David O. Russell, who is serving as guest director, will receive the Spirit of Independence Award. Also on tap are two Master Classes from Artists in Residence Rudolph and Gustavo Santaolalla; “An Evening with Costa-Gavras,” including the U.S. premiere of the director’s new film Capital; and an “In Conversation” with playwright/filmmaker David Mamet and magician/author Ricky Jay.
Free community screenings will include a 20th anniversary screening of Dazed and Confused from director Richard Linklater and a Dance-A-Long screening of John Waters’ Hairspray, which is marking its 25th anniversary.
