A 19-year-old Tunisian woman, Amina Tyler, stood up for women worldwide when she posted a topless photo of herself, bearing the words “My body belongs to me, and is not the source of anyone’s honour” in Arabic on her body.

In response to this act, a Tunisian cleric and the chair of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, allegedly said that Amina “deserves to be stoned to death” and said her act “could bring about an epidemic ... It could be contagious and give ideas to other women.”  Others in Tunisia have called for Amina to be criminally punished for her actions, including flogging, fines, and time in prison.

But the world supports Amina. I read about Amina Tyler from all the way in Argentina, and I was inspired by her brave act and her call for women’s rights. Women do not belong to anyone “as a source of honor” and deserve to be treated equally and with respect around the globe.

That’s why we’re standing in solidarity with Amina, and call on the Tunisian government to demand that her life and liberty are protected, and that she is kept safe from those who are calling for her death, for her to be beaten, or for her to be imprisoned solely for speaking up women.

Amina represents us all.

Amina Tyler es una joven tunecina de 19 años que se manifestó a favor de las mujeres del mundo al fotografiarse en topless, con una frase escrita en árabe que decía  "Mi cuerpo es mío y no representa el honor de nadie”.

En respuesta a este acto, un clérigo tunecino y Director de la Comisión para la Promoción de la Virtud y Prevención del Vicio, alegó que Amina “merece ser lapidada hasta su muerte” y sus actos “pueden causar una epidemia ...esto puede ser contagioso y dar ideas a otras mujeres”. Otras personas en Túnez también reclamaron que Amina fuera castigada criminalmente por sus actos, incluyendo azotes, multas y un tiempo en la cárcel.

Pero el mundo apoya a Amina. Yo leí la historia de Amina en Argentina, muy lejos de donde está ella, y me inspiraron su coraje y su llamado por los derechos de las mujeres. Las mujeres no pertenecen a nadie como “una fuente de honor” y merecen ser tratadas en forma igualitaria y con respeto en todo el mundo.

Es por eso que me manifiesto en solidaridad con Amina, y pido al gobierno de Túnez que ordene la protección de su vida y su libertad, y que la mantenga a salvo de quienes están pidiendo su muerte, que sea golpeada, o que sea encarcelada únicamente por alzar su voz por las mujeres.
