Sparks President Kristin Bernert said she resigned Tuesday because she lost her passion for her job.

‘I hit a point where I knew it was time,’ Bernert said. ‘I work with passion. If I’m halfway in, I can’t do the best job. The Sparks deserve better and I deserve better, quite frankly. If I’m not all in, that’s how I operate.’

Bernert said she had been contemplating moving on a for awhile, but wanted to help the team get through opening night and their first outdoor game on June 5 before stepping down.

‘I just wanted to get them through the first part of the season,’ Bernert said. ‘Everyone is prepared from a marketing and promotional standpoint.’

Bernert said the team’s 1-6 record, its worst start in franchise history, did not play into her decision to resign. In fact, she said she believes the team will turn around its season.

‘I think the team is going to be just fine,’ Bernert said. ‘There are six teams in the Western Conference, it’s very easy to gain ground back. I expect for the Sparks to be in the playoffs, and once you make the playoffs, you’re OK.’

Bernert began working for the Sparks in October 2008 after serving three years as the WNBA’s vice president of business development.

As for her future? She’s not quite sure. She’s going to take some time off and travel.

‘I want it to be something I love and something I’m challenged with,’ Bernert said of her next pursuit.
