What Should I Do at CMJ?

Another year, another 1,200 bands looking for a breakthrough at the CMJ Music Marathon, which opens in New York for the 30th time on Tuesday, with showcases, panel discussions and films through Oct. 23.
The sheer scale of CMJ can be bewildering. It’s not cheap, either: a badge, which gets you into the official shows (you’ll have to wait in line like everybody else for the unofficial parties all over the city), costs $495, or $295 for students. Here are a few suggestions to help you plan your week, whether you want to see as many obscure bands as possible or just want to do some schmoozing. A full schedule of bands is at cmj2010.com, but beware: it’s a long, long list.
