UNO Names Women?s Basketball Coach Amy Champion to Interim AD Post

NEW ORLEANS - University of New Orleans Chancellor Tim Ryan announced Friday morning the naming of Amy Champion to lead UNO's athletic department for the coming year, pending LSU System approval.

Champion, who has served as the Lady Privateer head women's basketball coach for the last six years, will lead UNO in its transition to NCAA Division III athletics.

She will provide immediate leadership and insight on UNO's application for acceptance into Division III, an application due to the NCAA office by May 15.

"I have always admired Amy for the work she has done leading our women's basketball program," Ryan said. "After multiple conversations with her, I know she realizes what a tremendous impact she can have on UNO. She has always been a teacher, and her leadership will play a vital role in integrating our athletic department with the entire University."

Champion brings 20 years of coaching experience to the AD chair. Prior to coming to UNO, she was an assistant coach for 10 years at UAB after serving as the head coach at Faulkner State Community College for three years.

She has represented UNO on numerous committees, including the NCAA Division I Rules and Issues Committee and the WNBA/NCAA Foresight Committee.

Champion earned her bachelor's degree from Delta State University in 1990 and later earned a Master's in Sports Administration from Southern Mississippi, where she was also a graduate assistant coach.

She will serve in the interim position for one year.

"I know that UNO athletics is in an important transition right now and I am thrilled to play a significant role," said Champion.  "I'm excited to focus on getting us to our ultimate destination and look forward to helping our coaches and student-athletes over the coming year."
