YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- It took an extra frame, but the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team gave Amanda Trethaway (San Francisco, Calif.–El Camino-Foothill C.C.) and Kayla Vantil (Mountain View, Calif. -Mountain View-Foothill C.C.) a Senior Day to remember here at the Convocation Center, Tuesday, March 2, as the Eagles upended the Mid-American Conference West Division Champion Toledo Rockets, 89-84.

Sophomore Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) emerged from her recent offensive slump to lead the Eagles (21-7, 11-5 MAC), tying a career-high and an EMU record with 40 points on 13-of-22 shooting from the field, including 4-of-9 from beyond the arc and 10-of-11 from the free throw line. James notched an EMU record 13 points in overtime, including 8-of-8 from the line.

Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio, Wadsworth) had a stellar all-around performance with 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists. However, it was Paige Redditt (Kansas City, Mo.-Belton), sinking four free throws in the final 18.9 seconds, who extended the game for the Eagles, tying the score at 69-69 to send it in to an extra period.

Tanika Mays led the Rockets (22-7, 12-4 MAC) with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Naama Sharif poured in 21 points to go along with her eight assists.

In the overtime period, Redditt and James each hit a basket in the first minute to go ahead 73-69. Sharif responded with a free throw, but James scored another break away basket to put EMU ahead 75-70. Clutch free throw shooting iced the game for the Eagles.

To start the game, the Rockets shot out to an 11-2 lead over the Eagles less than four minutes into the game, but the Eagles offensive leader, James, ignited a 15-4 counter run to give EMU its first lead. Scoring five quick points off of a layup and three-pointer, James pulled the Eagles to within four, 13-9. James added another layup, followed by an India Hairston (Flint, Mich.-Hamaday) three-point play and two Miller free throws to take the first lead of the game, 17-16, at the 10:06 mark.

The teams would exchange baskets for the rest of the half, as Eastern took a 31-26 lead into halftime.

James stormed out of the gates in the second half, picking up where she left off in the first half by hitting a three-pointer and netting another fast break layup to swell the Eagle lead to 10, 36-26.

After another EMU-UT exchange, Eastern took a commanding 44-30 lead, capped by a James three pointer. The Eagles, however, allowed Toledo to get back into the game with a 14-2 run of their own, which brought the score to 46-44.

The Rockets were able to regain the lead with 9:24 remaining in the contest as Mays hit a spinning layup in the lane to make it 49-48. After UT pushed its lead to six, 55-49, EMU again responded with a De'Ja Wills (Anderson, Ind.-Anderson) three and five straight points by Schrock to go ahead 57-55 with six minutes remaining.

After going 13-plus minutes without a basket, James hit another big shot for the Eagles to make it a 63-62 contest with the Rockets still holding the slight advantage.

Lecretia Smith missed two free throws for Toledo with 29.4 seconds remaining in the contest which, had she connected on them both, would've put UT up by four points. But she failed to convert and pathed the way for Redditt to knot things up with her free throws. For the game, EMU shot 34-45 from the line.

James' performance in overtime allowed her to surpass the 1,000-point plateau for her career in less than two full seasons dawning the Green and White uniform. She finished the game with 1,008 career points, good for 15th on the all-time scoring list. She also needs just 20 points to tie Laurie Byrd for the all-time single season scoring mark of 602 points in one campaign.

The win secures a No. 5 seed for the Eagles as they head into the MAC Tournament. Eastern will host No. 12 seed University at Buffalo here at the Convocation Center, March 6. The game will start at 2 p.m.
