Minnesota Lynx point guard Lindsay Whalen is planning to end her WNBA career in her home state.

The former University of Minnesota Gophers standout, 28, will sign a multiyear contract today with the Lynx, according to a person with knowledge of situation.

Whalen will make the WNBA veteran’s maximum annual salary of $101,500. Whalen, signed through the end of this season, came to the Lynx in a blockbuster deal in January.

Nba / Pacers get Collison, Posey in trade

The Indiana Pacers acquired point guard Darren Collison and forward James Posey from New Orleans in a four-way trade that also includes New Jersey and Houston.

The Pacers also said they dealt Troy Murphy to the Nets, who sent guard Courtney Lee to Houston. To complete the trade, the Rockets shipped swingman Trevor Ariza to New Orleans.

  • Toronto acquired forward Julian Wright from New Orleans in exchange for guard Marco Belinelli.
  • Isiah Thomas will not return to the New York Knicks after all. Thomas said he was declining a position as a consultant with the franchise he ran for 4 1/2 years because it might not be legal.
  • The Chicago Bulls signed free-agent swingman Keith Bogans. A person with knowledge of the deal said the deal is guaranteed for one year with a team option for a second.
  • Former Timberwolves assistant and ex-NBA head coach Eric Musselman is getting another chance to coach and will be introduced today as the Reno Bighorns’ coach in the NBA’s Development League. He began coaching as an assistant under his father, Bill, with the Wolves in 1990-91.

    Auto Racing / Menard to drive for Childress next year

    Paul Menard is moving to Richard Childress Racing next season and bringing with him the sponsorship that organization needs to be a four-car team. Menard will be sponsored at RCR by his father’s Wisconsin-based home improvement company.

    RCR tried to expand to four cars last season, but sponsorship issues forced the team to let Casey Mears go at the end of the year. Back down to three cars this year, RCR has rebounded to be one of the top teams in NASCAR and has three cars in contention for the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

    Menard, in his fourth full Cup season, is 23rd in points while driving a Menard-sponsored car for Richard Petty Motorsports.

    College Football / Turner given release from Michigan

    Michigan cornerback J.T. Turner is no longer a Wolverine.

    The school said Turner asked for and was granted his release. He had a chance to start this season after cornerback Donovan Warren chose to skip his senior season to enter the NFL draft.

  • Penn State sophomore wide receiver Curtis Drake will miss at least the first two games of the season and possibly more after fracturing his left tibia during practice Monday.
  • Southern California freshman running back Dillon Baxter was suspended for the season opener at Hawaii.
  • Former Montana State football coach Mike Kramer said he settled a lawsuit with the university partly because it was interfering with his desire to return to coaching.

    Area / Rydberg gets U.S. Open wild card

    Jon Rydberg of Oakdale is one of eight players invited to play in the men’s draw at the 2010 U.S. Open Wheelchair tournament. The event, in its fifth year, will be Sept. 9-12 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

    Rydberg, who represented the United States at the 2004 and 2008 Paralympics, received a wild card into the men’s singles and doubles tournament after recently coming out of retirement.

    The purse for the event will be $100,000, the highest total prize money offered by any of the Grand Slam wheelchair events.

  • Gophers junior wide receiver Brandon Green (knee) and center D.J. Burris (hamstring) sat out of Wednesday’s afternoon practice. Coach Tim Brewster said Green was day to day. Burris, whose injury isn’t as serious, was replaced by Ryan Wynn on the first-team offense.

    Brewster also mentioned freshman safety James Manuel and freshman cornerback Brock Vereen as newcomers who stood out in the team’s morning scrimmage.

  • Jason Cooper went 4 for 4 to lead the St. Paul Saints to a 9-5 victory over the Sioux City Explorers for a split of Wednesday’s action in front of 6,322 at Midway Stadium. The Saints lost the continuation of Tuesday night’s rain-suspended game 19-6.
