PHILADELPHIA – Two true freshmen and two transfer student-athletes will join the Temple women's basketball team for the 2010-11 season. Satoria Bell (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast/Labette CC), Ryia Newsome (Boston, Mass./West Roxbury) and Nicolette Works (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham) are all eligible to start the season, while Joelle Connelly (Arcade, N.Y./Pioneer/Hofstra) transferred mid-season last year and will be eligible to play in December, 2010.

Bell, a 5-8 guard, played at Philadelphia's Northeast High School before starting her collegiate career at Labette C.C. in Kansas. She averaged 16.7 points per game along with 9.4 rebounds per game as a senior at Northeast. Bell was the 2009-10 Eastern Division MVP at Labette and helped lead the team to a third-place finish at the NJCAA National Championships.

“Satoria was a great scorer for her junior college team, and is a great addition for us,” said third-year head coach Tonya Cardoza. “She's really a complete guard who can score and defend.”

Newsome is a 5-5 guard out of West Roxbury High School in Boston. “Ryia is a quick, athletic guard who likes to push the tempo,” said Cardoza. “She's a great play-maker. She will see time at the point. Her senior year was cut short after she suffered a season-ending knee injury.”

Works was named to the All-Central New York First Team as a senior at Nottingham High School after averaging 16.5 points and 11 rebounds per game. The 5-11 forward scored 1,050 points in her career at Nottingham.

“Nikki is a hard worker with a lot of energy and will be a good post presence for us at the 3 or 4 spot,” said Cardoza.

Connelly was the Colonial Athletic Association's Rookie of the Year as a freshman at Hofstra in 2009, averaging 9.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. The 6-2 forward joined the Owls halfway through last season, and will be eligible to play for her junior year in December due to NCAA transfer rules. Connelly was a two-time Western New York High School Player of the Year at Pioneer High School.

“Joelle is a big presence in the post and is different from other posts we've had in the way she can play with her back to the basket. She works extremely hard, gets up and down the floor and can give us points in the paint.”
