PHILADELPHIA - Kristen McCarthy broke the all-time Temple women's basketball single-game scoring record with 42 points in leading the Owls (19-6, 8-2) to a 79-68 win over defending Atlantic 10 Tournament champ Charlotte (15-10, 8-3).

McCarthy's total broke a 27-year old record set by Marilyn Stephens who scored 41 points against George Mason during the 1983-84 season. The Liacouras Center women's basketball record was nine years old, as Natalia Isaac had scored 38 points against UMass on Feb. 23, 2001.

McCarthy shot 15-of-24 from the field, 3-of-4 from behind the arc and 9-of-12 from the free throw line, and to top it all off she notched a double-double by leading the Owls with 11 rebounds.

"It feels really good (to get the record)," said McCarthy. "I've been doing a lot of extra shooting and it's nice that it's paying off. My teammates are happy for me and I definitely couldn't have done it without them. But I don't want to be satisfied with anything I do. I want to keep improving and getting better all the time."

LaKeisha Eaddy scored 14 points and dished out a game-high five assists for Temple, who has now won nine of its last 10 contests.

McCarthy scored 19 points in the first half to help Temple lead by 11, 35-24 at the break. Her final bucket came at the buzzer, ending a 15-6 run for the Owls.

Temple led from the first possession on a bucket from McCarthy, and never trailed or allowed the 49ers to tie. Charlotte stayed within one or two possessions until the final five minutes when the Owls began to pull away.

Eaddy also scored in double figures in the first half for Temple with 10, and the Owls out-shot the 49ers 52 percent to 34.6 percent from the field.

Temple opened the second half on a 6-2 run to lead by 15, 41-26, but the 49ers got the margin back to seven, 52-45 at the 10:56 mark.

McCarthy broke the 30-point mark on a fast break layup at 7:50, and then converted an old-fashioned three-pointer after being fouled to put the Owls up 58-46 and total 32 points.

Foul trouble began to play a role as the Owls sent Charlotte to the line on three consecutive occasions where the 49ers pulled within six, 60-54 with 6:29 remaining.

McCarthy continued her dominance in the final minutes, hitting two big three-pointers to hold off the 49ers. She was fouled twice in the final minute and was solid enough at the line to break the 40-point mark and then set the record, holding off any comeback hopes for Charlotte.

"We haven't seen a score in the 70's for awhile," said Temple head coach Tonya Cardoza. "This was a big win for us. Charlotte has been playing really well. I'm proud of Kristen. She put the team on her back and took them to a victory."

Temple will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at home in the Liacouras Center against Duquesne. Game time is set for noon, and is both Temple's School Day game as well as the WBCA Pink Zone game. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to show support in the fight against breast cancer.
