Women's Basketball Downs Western, 65-52, on Pink Zone Night

Eastern, now 19-7 overall and 9-5 in MAC action, had 10 players crack the scoring column

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team came up with a solid team effort to record a 65-52 win over Western Michigan University here Wednesday night, Feb. 24, in a Mid-American Conference West Division win in a “Pink Zone Game” in the Convocation Center.

The Eagles wore pink uniforms in the game which served as a WBCA initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball on campuses and in communities and was held in memory of former North Carolina State Women's Head Basketball Coach Kay Yow who died from breast cancer.

Eastern, now 19-7 overall and 9-5 in MAC action, had 10 players crack the scoring column with just three players in low double figures in the game with junior guard Sydney Huntley (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) scoring 11 while junior guard Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) and sophomore center Paige Redditt (Kansas City, Mo.-Belton) added 10 each. Junior Kristin Thomas (Winter Park, Fla.-Edgewater-Hillsborough C.C.) had nine rebounds for the Eagles who won the rebound battle, 44-39.

Western Michigan, now 7-20 overall and 2-12 in league play, was paced by junior center Ebony Cleary with 12 points and 11 rebounds with sophomore Miame Giden and junior Taylor Manley chipping in 10 points each.

For the game the Eagles would shoot 35.8 percent from the field on 19-of-53 shooting with Western making just 16-of-48 shots for 33.3 percent.

Sophomore guard Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) jump-started the Eagles with the game's first basket on a short jump and the two teams traded leads through the first five minutes before EMU began to assert itself on the offensive end.

Back-to-back three-point field goals by Lindsey Mahone (Corpus Christi, Texas-Mary Carroll) and Huntley would give the Eagles a 19-12 lead with just over five minutes left in the first half.

Eastern would out-score Western, 7-2, over the final three minutes of the first stanza to take a 26-17 lead into intermission.

Both teams struggled from the field in the first half with EMU connecting on just 7-of-33 field goals (21.2 percent) while Western was making just 6-of-22 (27.3 percent). The Eagles made four triples and 8-of-13 three throws (61.5 percent) with Western hitting 5-of-9 (55.6 percent) in the first 20 minutes.

Huntley led all first-half scorers with seven while teammate Thomas hauled down eight rebounds.
The Eagles came out on fire to start the second half, rolling to a 18-point lead. 43-25, with 13:01 left.

Western would come up with a flurry of its own at that point, out-scoring Eastern, 9-2, to cut Eastern's advantage to 11, 45-34, with 9:15 remaining.

The visitors would get no closer than 11 the rest of the way as the Eagles built an 18-point advantage, 65-47, with 1:40 left, allowing Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert to empty here bench for the final states of the contest.

The Eagles will now hit the road to DeKalb, Ill. for a Saturday, Feb. 27, 3 p.m. MAC West Division tilt against the Northern Illinois University Huskies.
