As the summer days begin to cool, the tips of leaves begin to wither, and the crisp Autumn rain begins to fall, the Brewhouse Team is looking hotter, fresher, and drier than ever! On top of that, we're excited to announce that we are officially on the lookout for a new developer to join our hot, fresh, and dry (witted) team.
Do these statements apply to you?
-
“I love conversing with product owners and believe it is one the best XP principles for making great software.”
-
“Before pushing up my latest commit, I take a moment to ask myself ‘Hmm… how can I make this code better?’”
-
“I’ve been building Rails apps for quite some time now, and have a deep understanding of how Rails works and am always up for punching in
bundle open activerecord
.” -
“I understand how the internet is put together to the level of understanding HTTP, web servers, and gophers.”
-
“Databases are not just things in the cloud I send ActiveRecord queries to.”
If you found yourself nodding your head in agreement with these statements and you're interested in working with us here at Brewhouse, then we'd love to speak to you!
At Brewhouse we design and develop products people love. We believe creating digital products is a craft, like forging a sword from a sheet of steel or brewing that perfect cup of coffee from well-sourced beans. Since 2013, we've shipped many great products by focusing on high quality software and a strong sense of collaboration with our clients.
We always develop with the latest version of Rails. We appropriate tried-and-true conventions over the latest flash-in-the-pan trends. Recent topics of discussion with the team are around:
- Will ActionCable be of any use?
- Turbolinks or JS frameworks (What’s the right JS for the job)
- How to do proper JS integration testing (capybara-webkit / jasmine)
- Using abstraction to further help build well-architected applications (Services, page objects, decorators, etc.)
In Javascript, we’ve been working a lot more with React but have in the past built projects with Ember/Angular. Other areas of work surround ES6, Browserify, Rails asset pipeline, etc.
With databases, we’re mainly a Postgres team but have implemented projects with ElasticSearch (Kibana), Redis and Redshift.
Culture fit is important to us. We meet with you to understand what drives you as a developer. We then have you pair program with one of our developers on something as real as we can to help us identify how important collaboration is to you when working on a problem.
We are aiming to find a new developer by September 2015, but are flexible on this.
Though most companies won’t discuss the topic of salary this early in the conversation, we hold transparency as one of our core values. Taking into consideration your experience and knowledge, as well as your understanding that we are an early-stage company, we are prepared to offer a yearly salary between $80–100k CAD.
It’s also worth mentioning that we give a full benefits plan to everyone in the company, your health and peace of mind is important to us.
We have a lovely space in Gastown that is bright, beautiful, and homey. With a large rooftop patio (w/ BBQ!) where we hold community events. We allow remote work when it’s necessary and the project allows it.
We schedule our week so that everyone is working on either internal products or client projects the first four days of the week, leaving Friday for team discussions, retrospectives, writing, learning, and anything else you're interested in pursuing that aligns with the goals of our team.
Allowing the 5th day to be used for team discussions, retrospectives and “Friday time”. Friday time allows us all to spend time on work we wouldn’t normally do in a week that aligns with the business, Blogging, Marketing, Programming in different languages, Database deep-diving, etc. Our Brewhouse blog gets up to 25,000 unique readers a month.
We've worked hard to establish clear boundaries between work and your personal life. The earliest we allow meetings to be scheduled is 9:30am, and simply expect each team member to put in the appropriate amount of time to ensure your work gets done and goals are met. We strongly discourage working evenings and weekends, because who wants to do that when we've got mountains to climb and lakes to swim?
Sound good? Want more info? Let’s grab coffee :)
