POMONA, Calif. – Danelle Bishop, interim head coach of the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team, announced a late change to the team's 2010-11 schedule on Monday. The Broncos' season opener will now fall on Friday, Nov. 12, with a 7 p.m. road contest against Nevada of the Division I Western Athletic Conference (WAC).
CPP will play its home opener two days later, in a 1 p.m. meeting against Dominican in Kellogg Gym.
“We're extremely excited for the opportunity to play Nevada,” Bishop said. “It's a huge opportunity for us to go and play in such a great venue. That experience for our team will certainly pay dividends later in the season.”
The Broncos are coming off of a 2009-10 campaign that featured CPP's highest win total in five years at 22-7 and the program's first NCAA Division II Tournament appearance in that span of time.
Now the Broncos are under the leadership of Bishop, who collected a 138-85 record at her two previous head coaching stints at Azusa Pacific and Cal Baptist. In the preseason California Collegiate Athletic Association coaches' poll released two weeks ago, the CPP squad was tabbed to finish third.
The top returner for the Broncos is Reyana Colson, who led the team in points per game (16.6), steals (53) and assists (76) en route to earning selection to the Daktronics All-West Region First Team for the second-straight season.
The Wolf Pack of Nevada also earned the No. 3 ranking in its conference's preseason poll, behind Fresno State and Louisiana Tech respectively. Two Nevada players earned preseason All-WAC First Team honors: Tahnee Robinson and Shavon Moore. The Wolf Pack hosted CCAA member San Francisco State on Sunday for an exhibition game, with Nevada cruising to a 75-45 victory.
The Nov. 12 matchup will be the third all-time meeting between CPP and Nevada. The Broncos won the first two contests during the 1974-75 and 1975-76 seasons.
