Purdue coach Sharon Versyp agrees to two-year contract extension

Purdue head women’s basketball coach Sharon Versyp agreed to a two-year contract extension, securing her presence on the Boilermaker sideline through the 2014-15 season. It is the second contract extension for Versyp who became Purdue’s eighth head coach in April 2006.

The terms of the contract remain the same and provide guaranteed compensation of $358,000 per year, with bonus opportunities tied to academic, athletic and paid attendance performance and could total up to an additional $325,000 annually.

"Sharon has a passion for Purdue and is one of the best at developing young people in all aspects of life," said Purdue athletics director Morgan J. Burke in a statement. "Her student-athletes succeed in the classroom, on the playing floor and in life. With the returning nucleus augmented by two of Indiana’s finest [Courtney Moses and Dee Dee Williams] we all know this team is positioned to compete for championships. Sharon is a valued member of the broader Purdue community and we were happy to offer this extension.”

Versyp guided the Boilermakers to two Big Ten Tournament championships (2007 and 2008) and two NCAA Tournament Elite Eight appearances (2007 and 2009). She has a 90-49 record at Purdue and is 207-114 in 10 seasons as a collegiate head coach.

“I am appreciative of the support shown of me and my staff by President Córdova, Morgan Burke and the entire Purdue community,” said Versyp. “This contract extension is continued evidence of the commitment between Purdue University and me, and an important step toward the growth of our program. We are dedicated to guiding Purdue to an elite level for many years to come while promoting academic achievement and good citizenship with our student-athletes.”

All four of Versyp’s recruiting classes have been rated in the top 15 nationally, including last fall’s class of Moses, Williams and transfers Antionette Howard and Drey Mingo, which was ranked as high as sixth.

Versyp, a native of Mishawaka, Indiana played point guard for the Boilermakers from 1984 to 1988, and is set to be inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 24, in Indianapolis.
