Nothing Spooky About This Weekend’s Match Ups

-------------------------------------

Well, Halloween is this Saturday and you can bet that a number of fans will be dressed up and on display while their favorite teams clash on the gridiron. This past Saturday I noticed some people were already decked out in their favorite ghoulish regalia, with one fan wearing an odd-looking Joe Paterno mask as Michigan fell to Penn State at the Big House.

November Looms

college footballWhile there aren’t too many tilts between Top 25 teams, a number of games are important this last Saturday in October. The way that the schedule is working out for some teams, they’ll have just three games left in November before the regular season ends. Big Ten teams, for example, see their season end on November 21st even as conference playoffs and the Big East season continues for the following two weeks.

Hmmm…perhaps the Big Ten should consider spreading their season beyond Thanksgiving instead of losing the news story of the day to other conferences.

My Picks

Anyway, I like the following match ups this weekend:

West Virginia at South Florida – The Bulls have a solid track record: start the season strong, but fade down the stretch. The Mountaineers need this victory, but South Florida isn’t a given. The Bulls have been a thorn in #23 West Virginia’s side for a number of years now; will they cause trouble this Mischief Night? West Virginia 23, South Florida 20.

South Carolina at Tennessee – The Gamecocks are good, but the Vols aren’t about to roll over and quit. #22 South Carolina will be playing against an inspired Tennessee team who nearly took #2 Alabama down last week except for a missed field goal to end the game. Tennessee 31, South Carolina 21.

Texas at Oklahoma State – The battle for the Big 12 South is this weekend with the winner having a leg up as being the divisional representative for the Big 12 championship game in December. #3 Texas still has hopes of playing in the BCS title game while #14 Oklahoma State is distancing itself from its early season loss to Houston. Texas 28, Oklahoma State 24.

USC at Oregon – If the Ducks can knock off the Trojans than #10 Oregon will be in the driver’s seat for the PAC 10 conference championship. #5 USC needs to keep winning in order to stay in the title hunt. This is the game everyone will want to watch on Saturday. USC 21, Oregon 17.

Stay safe this weekend!
