‘Client 9’ on the Oscar Documentary Short List; ‘Joan Rivers’ Not

LOS ANGELES—The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its so-called short list for documentary features, those being the 15 films that make the first cut of a screening process and are officially in the running for Oscar nominations. Not in the running are “ Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work.” But the list includes many of the films that average film buffs would expect to be there. And that has not always been the case with the short list, which last year omitted “Tyson” and “Capitalism: A Love Story.”

This year, the 15 candidates are:

“Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer,” Alex Gibney, director (ES Productions LLC)

“Enemies of the People,” Rob Lemkin and Thet Sambath, directors (Old Street Films)

“Exit Through the Gift Shop,” Banksy, director (Paranoid Pictures)

“Gasland,” Josh Fox, director (Gasland Productions, LLC)

“Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould,” Michele Hozer and Peter Raymont, directors (White Pine Pictures)
