June 02, 2010

MUNCIE, Ind. - Todd Steelman has been hired as associate head coach for women's basketball at Ball State University, according to Ball State head coach Kelly Packard

"It is with great excitement we welcome Todd and his entire family to Muncie, Ball State University and our women's basketball program," said Packard.  "It requires a unique dynamic to function in the role of associate head coach. I prioritized finding a talented individual with a like-hearted approach in the motive that inspired us each to choose collegiate coaching as a profession. Todd's coaching experience is extensive, but it was his character and like-hearted coaching philosophy that solidified my decision."

Steelman comes to Ball State after spending five seasons at Clemson University.  He was an assistant coach from 2005-10 under Cristy McKinney at Clemson, where he worked primarily with the team's post players. He played a key role in the Lady Tigers recruiting responsibilities along with monitoring the student athletes' academic progress. He also served as the program's liaison with the sports marketing department and served as the director of the Lady Tiger Basketball Camps overseeing 1,000 campers in 2009.

"I am thrilled to be joining the staff at Ball State," Steelman says.  "Kelly has done a great job establishing a standard of excellence here, and it was obvious through our conversations we share a passion and vision for the players, staff, and the program as a whole.  It is an exciting time, the future is bright, and I am ready to hit the ground running!"

Before Clemson, Steelman spent two seasons as an assistant at Rice University, also under head coach McKinney. He started his coaching career as a high school coach for nine years, which began at Cresset Christian Academy in Durham, N.C.  He was Cresset's varsity girls head coach from 1994-99 and 2001-03.  From 1997-99 he was also the boy's head coach and he spent four years as the school's athletics director.  From 1999-2001 he was at the head coach for the girl's basketball program at Kerr-vance Academy located in Henderson, N.C.

A graduate of John Brown University, Steelman earned a bachelor's of science degree in broadcasting in 1989 and continued with graduate studies at the University of North Carolina.  At UNC, Steelman worked as a volunteer with the 1993-94 NCAA Championship women's basketball team.
